The three quotes I chose were...
"But parents who don't function within that culture often want something else."
As someone who grew up with parent who came from a wealthy life back in their main land (had lots of property, ranches and animals) it was a total shocker to see how now they are living out that traditional "white picket fence" dream. It is a total difference and in some way I felt as if they threw away part of themselves and their culture for that "something else."
"I do not advocate that is it the schools job to attempt to change the homes of poor and nonwhite children to match the homes of those in culture of power."
I do believe that many parents put a lot of pressure on schools and teacher to be able to change their child's future, sure it can be start but schools is not responsible for that. the child itself can be the only one to make that happen. There's only so much a school can do.
The quotes you chose to write with really summed up the articles point. Good job!
ReplyDeleteWhenever I hear about how financially comfortable people were in their home country before immigrating to the US to live a life of catching up, I always have to think about what the contexts and reasons for moving were in the first place. As I come from a family who lived with the same story, it's fortunately much easier for me to understand the circumstances that might have been present.
