"Troublemaker" (Blog #5)

This week I read “Troublemakers” by Carla Shalaby...

While reading this article talked all about how often the students who are seen more as "free" are the ones who are labeled the troublemakers. With these troublemakers they are often punished unfairly. But what a lot of people don't realize is there children are often acting out because of a bigger issues.

Students who act out often are doing this because of trauma or unfair treatment. She mentions in her article that when these kid act out it can be looked at as a "cry for help." She goes on to explain how instead of labeling them and treating them as this bad child, there should be more compassion and focus on understanding the child more than punishing and correcting them.

Another reason why the students might be acting out is because they feel misunderstood, unheard. But instead of teacher helping these students, they just but a label on them and ignore them...moving on.

I have seen this personally during my elementary school days and with my placement. During my placement the teacher that I observe often picks on one-two students all the time. She picks on them even for the slightest thing like asking a question or talking quietly. The looks on these kids faces makes me really sad because it's so obvious that they don't mean to be "bad" or disruptive, but that there is so much more going on.
